SPENCER GLACIER HIKE IN ALASKA

Spencer Glacier

When I went to Iceland a year ago I was amazed by the glaciers but never had the chance to climb them. I decided to go to Alaska earlier this year and knew I could not leave without doing a glacier hike. There were so many options around Anchorage: Exit Glacier, Matanuska Glacier and of course Spencer Glacier. I did my research and decided on Spencer Glacier with Ascending Path. It was known to be less crowded and it comes with a kayak tour through the ice bergs.

The Experience

The tour starts early from Anchorage and takes two hours on the Alaska Railroad. The scenery on the train ride is beautiful! There’s views of Denali, glaciers and gorgeous ocean views. The train also stops in Whittier for about 20 minutes to explore.

Once we arrived to our destination I saw the lake with large ice bergs and Spencer Glacier in the distance. I was so excited for this activity as it has always been a bucket list of mine. Even better that I got to kayak through ice bergs AND ice trek! #winning

Our private tour had a total of 4 people including the guide. It was perfect to get to know one another. While kayaking through the ice bergs we got close to the point we could touch them!

Once we made it to Spencer Glacier we put on our crampons. Crunch crunch crunch I went on the ice! There’s something special about hiking on the ice with metal spikes and feeling like you can climb the world. BTW, we had the entire lake and glacier to oursevles! One of the top reasons why Spencer Glacier should be your choice.

We hiked and hiked and hiked looking for ice caves and found a few small ones that were safe to look into. There were many times I felt like I was going to fall but the crampons are pretty amazing tools on your feet.

We hiked for hours and it didn’t feel like it at all! It was so much fun hiking the glaciers and seeing such amazing views. I didn’t want it to end. On the way back we kayaked next to Spencer Glacier before heading back.

This was one of the best experiences I have ever done! If you’re thinking about ice trekking or kayaking through ice bergs I highly suggest this tour. It’s the best way to experience both in one tour. On the way back on the Alaska Railroad we saw one of the best sunsets ever! Wish I took a photo of it, itt was the perfect way to end our day.

Things to know before your hike:

Damn you kayaked through icebergs??? How cool is that? I hope I can make it to Alaska one day and experience this wonderful kayak/hike experience in snow. I don’t know if I can manage in these insanely sub zero temps – I guess I will just layer up!!!

We went inside a glacier on a tour in Iceland. The kids thought the crampons were so much fun. I’d love to try something like this. My big worry would have been the cold but 60 degrees is positively a warm sunny day here in England 🙂
