MILOS, GREECE TRAVEL GUIDE: 5 DAY ITINERARY

If Greece is on your bucket list, I highly suggest adding Milos Island to your itinerary! Santorini and Mykonos are hands down the most popular islands but if you’re looking for something not as crowded with plenty of fun activities, Milos is it! I got engaged in Santorini, and you can see all my photos here and the amazing hotel we stayed at.

This is my second time visiting Milos, and I still was not able to see everything the island has to offer. During my second time visiting Milos I spent 5 days on the island, my recommendation is to spend at least 4-5 days to see everything.

HOW TO GET TO MILOS, GREECE

Greece is currently open to US Citizens and you do not need to be vaccinated to visit. Below are a few things you need to know to get into Greece:

  • Show proof of vaccination card or provide a negative PCR test up to 72 hours before entry or a negative antigen/rapid test 48 hours before entry to Greece.
  • All visitors must fill out a PLF form at least 48 hours prior to arrival in Greece. You will receive a QR code to show the authorities when you arrive. If you do not have this, you will need to take a COVID test at the airport at no cost to you but the line is pretty long!
  • When leaving Greece to head back to the United States everyone must have a negative PCR or antigen/rapid test within 72 hours before their departure. Even if you’re vaccinated. I got mine done at the airport with Athens Medical Group and prepaid for it, but the line was SUPER long. I suggest making an appointment at a clinic before you leave, your hotel should be able to help you with this.
  • Traveling to each island even if it’s by ferry all visitors will need to show a vaccination card or proof of negative COVID test.

*Please make sure to check the government website for updates!

I spent 1 night in Athens when I arrived at Electra Metropolis Hotel which has an awesome rooftop with a view of the Acropolis. I also spent 1 night in Athens on my way home and stayed at the Sofitel across from the Athens International Airport for convenience.

I took a flight from Athens to Milos which was a 40-minute flight. Most people take the ferry which may have more options to fit your schedule. On my way back from Milos I took a ferry with SeaJets to Athens which was 3.5 hours. Ferries are more reliable and also cheaper.

HOW TO GET AROUND IN MILOS

Milos is not as small as you might think so you will need a car on the island to get to all the beaches and towns. Visitors from the US will need to have an international driver’s license to rent a car. It’s super easy to apply and costs $20 through AAA. Using an ATV is also a great option as well!

WHERE TO STAY

There are 3 villages to pick from: Plaka, Pollonia, and Adamas. I prefer staying in one of these areas for the convenience & nearby restaurants.

PLAKA

Plaka is where I stayed and highly recommend it! Plaka is a cute little town and reminds me of a mini Mykonos. It was the perfect area to be based and has a lot of cute restaurants.

Airbnbs are great options in Milos. We stayed at Eight Infinity Suites 2 level residence and they also have a smaller option available with a cliffside view for 2 guests. Hotel option: Cave Suites Milos is not in Plaka but pretty close and near Sarakiniko Beach.

POLLONIA

Pollonia is also super cute with great restaurant options and where guests go to go on boat tours. Hotel options: Milos Breeze Boutique & Melian Boutique Hotel.

ADAMAS

Adamas is the main port, this is where the ferry arrives and a great location to be based in Milos. Hotel option: Miland Suites & Olea Bay Hotel. In 2017 I stayed in a beautiful Airbnb not too far from Adamas called Skinopi Lodge. If you’re looking for private accommodations this one is it.

Even though the island is not too big, all the places to visit are fairly close and no more than 30 minutes apart. It’s easy to see a lot of locations in one day and you will also have time to go back to certain areas multiple times.

THINGS TO DO IN MILOS

You don’t necessarily need to plan out an itinerary but have an idea of all the places you do want to visit. Everything is fairly easy to get to so you can really decide what to do the day before. I would leave at least 1 full day for a boat tour to the neighboring islands.

EXPLORE PLAKA

Plaka is a super cute town and I highly recommend visiting or staying in the area. There are plenty of photo opportunities in the town and the best viewpoint to watch the sunset is from the Venetian Castle! This is also a must – it’s a bit of a walk so wear comfortable walking shoes.

FISHING VILLAGES IN MILOS

Mandrakia: the most popular fishing village in Milos. It’s super Instagrammable with colorful homes and one of the best restaurants in Milos called Medusa Restaurant. I definitely recommend having lunch here but first make sure to put your name on the list as there could be a wait.

Fyropotamos: This was my second favorite! It might be more of a beach than a fishing village but it has a few bright-colored boathouses and a beautiful church. The water here was stunning and great for swimming. I recommend visiting this and Mandrakia on the same day as it’s only 10-15 minutes from one another.

Fourkovouni: A smaller fishing village and a bit out of the way. We found this village through a recommendation and not a lot of people know about it! It’s quite small so we had this place to ourselves but just FYI a bit off the beaten path.

Agios Konstantinos: I did not make it here but heard it’s a cute little fishing village.

Klima: I did not make it here but it’s known as one of the most colorful fishing villages.

BEACHES IN MILOS

Sarakiniko: This is the best beach in Milos!! It really feels like you’re on the moon here and it has so many great photo opportunities. My friends and I loved it so much we went 3 times! I definitely recommend visiting around 9 am right before the crowds with no shadows and sunset here is a must!

Papafragas Beach: I went here during my first time in Milos and I recommend visiting mid-day when the sun is high since the beach is in between two large rocks. To get here you will need to climb down a ladder.

Firapotomos Beach: The beach is stunning and known for nearby cliff jumping spots.

Paralia Kastanas: This was off the beaten path but I’m so happy we found it!! Thank goodness for our friend Michael for driving because I’m not sure if my girlfriend and I could have driven down the small road/paths. Google maps took us to an area that was restricted but if you keep driving down the road you will see a sign that says Kastanas. Drive down to the bottom and park the car to get to the beach and you will need to climb over a few rocks at the end of the beach to get to the hidden beach with the arch!

Paliochori Beach: I wish I had time to visit this beach! It looked amazing when we drove by as it has restaurants on the beach that will cook your food in the sand!

Tsigkrado: This beach is super cute with a ladder that leads to the beach and super clear water. This was on my list but I did not have time to visit.

BOAT RIDE TO KLEFTIKO & ISLANDS

The best way to visit the beaches in Milos and see neighboring islands like Kleftiko and Polyaigos is by boat! Milos can be a pretty windy island so be prepared and have extra days in case it’s too windy to go on a boat. We did a full day on a boat and a half day the second day. Depending on what you’re looking for both are great options!

A full-day boat tour with Travel Me To Milos was on a sailboat and it was almost 12 hours! We went to a few islands and beaches and this was not a private tour. It was a group of 10 and roughly $100+ per person. Email them to inquire about other tours.

Private half-day tour on a speedboat with Salty Rides. I absolutely loved this as it was much quicker and since we already saw Kleftiko we spent more time at Polyaigos and since it’s a smaller boat they were able to take us to other private areas that larger boats do not go! Prices start at $1000 for the entire boat and up to 8 guests.

WHERE TO EAT

Since I stayed in Plaka most of my recommendations are in Plaka but I also suggest exploring Pollonia and Adamas for dining.

Mavros Xoiros: One of the most popular restaurants in Plaka. Make sure to make reservations and order the moussaka meatballs!

Kokkino: The best breakfast/brunch restaurant in Plaka! I literally went here every single morning for the coffee and the honey pancakes! The greek crepe was also amazing for dinner!

Archontoula: Super cute restaurant in Plaka. Try the cheese pie and souvlaki.

Paleos Pastry: Located in Plaka, this pastry cafe is great for breakfast! I recommend trying the famous Greek pies!

Yialos Restaurant: This was my favorite meal in Milos! Located in Pollonia, it’s a great option to visit for dinner after the boat tour. The feta fried cheese was a winner!

Medusa Restaurant: Located at Mandrakia, a great option for lunch and get the octopus!

Gyros of Milos: 3 gyros for under 8 euros and it was DELICIOUS! Located in Adamas.

Aggeliki Ice Cream: In Adamas, grab ice cream for dessert or before your ferry!

Showing how beautiful Greece is in this blog makes me look forward to visiting the country and its places. Make sure to first learn basic vocabulary for better communication with the locals.
