Canada is a great destination to travel to during the winter months and it should be on your list if it’s not. If you’re planning to visit between November and March, it can be freezing cold but with the right gear, you will stay warm throughout your trip to enjoy the great outdoors. After a lot of research and testing out my gear during my recent 9 day trip through Alberta in February (Edmonton, Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff, and Calgary). I’m happy to say that I stayed warm, dry and survived the Canadian Winter! Here are my packing winter tips for your next trip to Canada.
Packing Winter Tips For Your Next Trip to Canada
DRESS IN LAYERS
Dressing in layers is important to stay warm and it provides flexibility to adjust to the different temperatures.
- Icebreaker Long Sleeves is an investment. I had 2 with me throughout my trip to alternate days where I combined it with a tank top underneath for an extra layer and also had sweaters or turtlenecks over my long sleeves. These an investment but you can also go for cheaper options such as Uniqlo thermals
- Uniqlo HEATTECH Collection is a cheaper alternative for thermals. The collection includes crew neck long sleeve shirts, turtleneck long sleeve shirts, and leggings in extra warm, heattech, and ultra warm. These are great for layering
- Pack thick sweaters and cashmere sweaters which is much warmer then wool
- Fleece Leggings are a MUST! I lived in these every single day under my jeans or snow pants. They really help keep your legs warm and they’re super comfortable! They come in packages of 2. Some days I wore 3 layers by itself and that worked too
JACKETS
- Snow Jacket for snow activities will help keep you warm and dry
- Moose Knuckle or Canada Goose Jackets will be a lifesaver! I wore it over everything and it kept me super warm throughout the day
PANTS
- Snow Pants are a must if doing winter activities such as snowboarding, skiing, dog sledding, snowshoeing. or ice walks
- Jeans but I actually prefered just layering on leggings, however they can be worn over fleece leggings
ACCESSORIES
- Pom Beanies will help keep your head nice and toasty while staying stylish.
- Gloves will keep your hands warm from the freezing weather
- Scarves to help keep your neck warm and I mostly used it to cover my face when the wind got too cold
- Ear Muffs to keep those ears nice and warm
- Neck warmers/scarf are a life saver during winter activities! It will keep your face from freezing espeically if it’s snowing
- Wool Socks are very important! Wool socks will help keep your feet warm, always buy extra in case they get wet
- Hand Warmers & Feet Warmers were life savers!!! I used them every single day by putting it in my gloves and in my boots
BOOTS
- Sorel Boots were the perfect snow boots during my trip. They kept my foot dry, warm and they were really comfortable to wear.
- Moon Boots are one of the trendiest snow boots, they’re chic, warm and quite affordable!
Now you’re all set for your epic winter trip through Canada!
