I spent a weekend in wine country a few weeks ago and visited one of the best wineries in Napa Valley. Ryan and I heard great things about Opus One Winery and decided to book a tour to experience it ourselves.

The moment we entered the estate we were greeted by the simplicity of the courtyard with it’s architectural motif throughout the building. The building is made of modern materials; California redwood, stainless steel and Texas limestone.

There are two types of wine tours (both require reservations):

  • Estate Tour: An overview of Opus One’s history, aesthetics, vineyards and winemaking. This tour is from 1:30-2:30pm daily and cost $85 per person with a taste of the current vintage. Max party in this tour is 4 people and runs for 90 minutes
  • Double Vintage Tour & Tasting: This is a private intimate tour which runs daily at 10:30am and cost $140 per person with a tasting of two vintages of Opus One. Max party in this tour is 4 people and runs for 120 minutes.

Tasting Room

If you’re only interested in a tasting, the Partners’ Room is open daily from 10am to 4pm by appointment only.

Double Vintage Tour & Tasting

Ryan and I had the Double Vintage Tour & Tasting. After we checked in, we were escorted to wait in the Salon. Aliye who’s a seasoned expert welcomed us with our first tasting of Overture, Opus’s second wine. While enjoying our wine she explained the history and the joint partnership between Bordeaux’s Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi.

Most tours go through the vineyard but since it was raining during our visit we continued the tour past the winemaker’s laboratory onto the winemaking area. From there we went down to the room that houses over 1,000 barrels.

Making it back to the main room we tasted the 2013 Opus One. Opus One is a Bordeaux-style wine made in California. We had plenty of time to enjoy the current vintage and it definitely was one of the best wines I’ve had! I was very impressed with Aliye’s knowledge and had a great time learning about Opus One.

After our tour, we decided to purchase a glass of the 2011 vintage. It is often one of the rare chances to try this wine and we’re glad we tried it! We made our way up to the viewing area to enjoy our wine with a breathtaking view of Napa Valley.

Wow, what a gorgeous winery. Everything from the view of the vineyards to the interior design! We love going wine tasting, we made our way up to San Luis Obispo a few months ago and had a blast, we would love to make it up to Napa and do some more incredible tasting and enjoy the scenery. Opus One will definitely be on our must visit list when we do!

Such a beautiful winery. I wished I liked wine, but honestly, I’d visit pretty wineries just for the views. I only visited one while in Napa, but I’ll definitely have to bookmark this to visit with friends. They can taste test while I go snap-happy!

I would love to visit a winery one day. I’m a huge fan of wine, especially reds so I’m sure it would be a day well spent! The views in Napa look incredible!

What a beautiful winery! Your photos are so lovely.
I’m not much of a wine drinker but I still enjoy visiting wineries whenever I’m in the South of France. I just love walking around the fields and stealing a few grapes!
